UEFA Euro 1976

The 1976 UEFA European Football Championship final tournament was held in Yugoslavia. This was the fifth European Football Championship, held every four years and endorsed by UEFA. The final tournament took place between 16 June and 20 June 1976.

At the time, only four countries could play the final tournament which meant that there were only the semi-finals, the final and the third place match. This was the last tournament to have this format, as the tournament was expanded to include eight teams four years later.

It was the first and only time that all four matches in the final tournament were decided after extra time, either on penalties or by goals scored. This was also the last tournament in which the hosts had to qualify for the final stage.

The qualifying round was played throughout 1974 and 1975 (group phase) and 1976 (quarter-finals). There were eight qualifying groups of four teams each. The matches were played in a home-and-away basis. Victories were worth 2 points, draws 1 point, and defeats 0 points. Only group winners could qualify for the quarter-finals. The quarter-finals were played in two legs on a home-and-away basis. The winners of the quarter-finals would go through, to the final tournament.

The tournament was won by then called Czechoslovakia, and for over fifty years Slovakia played no matches as an independent country. During this period they contributed several key players to the Czechoslovak team, including the majority of the team that won the 1976 European Championships. Now Slovakia has qualified for World cup 2010, you can buy Slovakia world cup tickets and World Cup tickets for other teams online from ticket4football.

1960 European Nations' Cup

The 1960 UEFA European Nations Cup was the first European Football Championship, held every four years and endorsed by UEFA. The final tournament was held in France. It was won by the Soviet Union, who beat Yugoslavia 2–1 in Paris after extra time.

The tournament was a knockout competition; just 17 teams entered with some notable absences, West Germany, Italy and England among them. The teams would play home-and-away matches until the semi-finals; the final four teams would move on to the final tournament, whose host was selected after the teams became known.

Spain, still under Francisco Franco's far-right dictatorship, refused to travel to the Soviet Union, the main supporter of the Second Spanish Republic in the Spanish Civil War, and withdrew from the tournament, so the final four had three Communist countries: USSR, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia, to go with hosts France. In the semi-finals, the Soviets made easy work of the Czechoslovaks in Marseille, beating them 3–0. The other match saw a nine-goal thriller as Yugoslavia came on top 5–4, coming back from a two-goal deficit twice. Czechoslovakia beat the demoralized French 2–0 for third place.

In the final, Yugoslavia scored first, but the Soviet Union, led by legendary goalkeeper Lev Yashin, equalized in the 49th minute. After 90 minutes the score was 1–1, and Viktor Ponedelnik scored with seven minutes left in extra time to give the Soviets the inaugural European Championship. Slovakia Attempt European Championship and World Cup Qualification

The first chance for Slovakia to impress was in the qualifying tournament for the 1996 European Championships to be held in England. The newly formed side got off to a creditable start in a tough group with a goalless draw at home to France. Eventually home and away defeats to group winners Romania saw the Slovak’s eliminated, but they managed to win four of their ten matches, including a surprise 4-1 thrashing of Poland, and finished third in the table, behind Romania and France. Slovakia then went into qualifying for the 1998 World Cup in France, drawn in a pool alongside their former countrymen from the Czech Republic. The Slovak’s were beaten in Prague, but won the return encounter, although the result earned them nothing but pride, as both sides finished midway down the group, with Spain and Yugoslavia occupying the top two places.

Slovakia were then included in a qualification group for Euro 2000 which included minnows Liechtenstein and Azerbaijan. Victories over these sides, plus four points taken from two games against neighbours Hungary gave the Slovak’s third place in the group, after they were twice defeated by Portugal, and managed just one point from two games against Romania. The attempt to reach the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea ended the same way, with yet another agonising third place finish, just outside the play-off positions. This time it was Sweden and Turkey who edged out the improving Slovak’s. And it was to be another third place finish for Slovakia in their next campaign as dreams of reaching the European Championships in Portugal were quickly crushed. This time home and away defeats to both England and Turkey saw them finish well off the pace in their group, although they had the consolation of out-performing Macedonia and Liechtenstein.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification UEFA Group 3 was a UEFA qualifying group for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The group comprised the Czech Republic, Poland, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, Slovenia and San Marino.

The group was won by Slovakia, who qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The runners-up Slovenia entered the UEFA play-off stage. , keeping the eagerness of the viewers ticket4football.com provides football fans with the facility to get Slovakia world cup tickets and football tickets for other soccer events online.

The first official match of the first Slovak Republic (1939–1945) was played in Prague against Germany on 27 August 1939, and ended in a 2-0 victory for Slovakia. After the Second World War, the national football team was subsumed into the team of Czechoslovakia, and for over fifty years Slovakia played no matches as an independent country. During this period they contributed several key players to the Czechoslovak team, including the majority of the team that won the 1976 European Championships.

Their match back on Slovakian soil was the 4-1 defeat against Croatia in Bratislava on 20 April 1994. Slovakia suffered their biggest defeat since independence (6-0) on 22 June 1995, in Mendoza, against Argentina. Their biggest wins (7-0) have come against Liechtenstein in 2004 and San Marino in 2007.

Slovakia played in a major championship as an independent team for the first time in Euro '96 qualifying, but finished in third place in their qualifying group, behind Romania and France, having recorded wins against Poland, Israel and Azerbaijan, twice. In the 1998 World Cup qualifiers, Slovakia finished fourth in their six-team group with five wins, one draw and four defeats.
