Slovakia's Pekarik raring to go

Already boasting around 20 senior international caps for Slovakia and armed with a 2008/09 Bundesliga winners’ medal from club side Wolfsburg, 23-year-old right-back Peter Pekarik clearly has a bright future ahead. Calm, mature and a key figure for a Slovak team preparing to take part in their first FIFA World Cup.

“He’s a very talented player with a lot of potential. I’m sure he’s going to continue making progress in our league,” was the verdict of Schalke boss Felix Magath, when signing Pekarik for previous club Wolfsburg in the January 2009 transfer window. Peky did not disappoint either, making 16 league appearances as the Wolves strode to a maiden Bundesliga crown.

Slovakia: Nothing like the first time

They say the first time is always special, and in Slovakia the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ has a lovable debutant with feet planted firmly on the ground but hopes that spin up in the stratosphere.

A long tradition exists of first-time participants at the FIFA World Cup pulling off stirring results, whether by the force of sheer enthusiasm or ability out on the pitch. Senegal’s Lions of Teranga roared to the quarter-final round in 2002 after a famous opening-day victory over then-holders France. Nigeria’s Super Eagles thundered through USA 1994’s group stages, finishing ahead of Diego Maradona’s Argentina and Hristo Stoichkov’s impressive Bulgaria. The Republic of Ireland’s cheerful trip to the quarter-finals in 1990, and Korea DPR’s rousing upset of giants Italy and subsequent run to the last eight in England in 1966, are other examples of first-timers making a mark on the world stage.

Slovaks gamble on trio

Slovakia coach Vladimir Weiss was forced to gamble on the fitness of a trio of players when naming his provisional 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa squad.

Weiss' 29-man selection included Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, who has not played for the English Premier League side since breaking a metatarsal bone in his right foot three months ago.

Besiktas' Filip Holosko has also been named despite struggling with the after-effects of a broken leg sustained last year, while fellow striker Robert Vittek of Ankaragucu gets the nod after a recent knee injury.

The squad also includes the coach's son and namesake Vladimir Weiss, who spent the latter half of the Premier League season on loan at Bolton from Manchester City. Slovakia World Cup Tickets are now available online. Other than World cup tickets you can also get Champions League final tickets, Inter Milan vs Bayern Munich tickets and World cup 2010 tickets from the same spot online without any headache and with guaranteed delivery of tickets at home.

Slovakia’s World Cup Preview

With 14 caps in his international career, Jan Mucha is the likely starter of the Slovakian squad and despite his limited experience facing elite strikers the keeper was good enough to rightfully earn a spot for his nation in this year’s World Cup. Not great on paper, but that is kind of a theme of the first time Cup team.

Martin Skrtel of Liverpool is the only real recognizable player on the unit and he will be joined by Peter Pekaric of Wolfsburg, Jan Durica of Hannover 96, Martin Petras, and Marek Cech of West Brom. The unit has several players of major league talent, but few of these men start for their club. Still though they were also good enough to hold offenses in check in the WCQ.

Most capped player Miroslav Karhan of Mainz is the team leader and the most respected player in the club’s midfield and young Marek Hamsik of Napoli has exploded onto the scene in the last few seasons and is one of the key offensive performers in all of the World Cup and is also more of a forward then a midfielder by performance. Miroslav Stoch of FC Twente should also likely start and Vladimir Weiss of Bolton Wanderers is another key midfielder that will provide the inexperienced international squad a bit of major league experience.

Robert Vittek of Ankaragucu and Stanislav Sestak of Bochum make-up the likely two starters and both of these guys have over 30 caps in their international career. Filip Holosko is a reliable reserve player and should see some regular minutes late in many of these key matches this summer. Not a great unit, but not the worse in the Cup either.

It does impress that the club did not lose a match to the Czech Republic, North Ireland, or Poland, but the club did lose twice to the only other team from the goup to make the cup (Slovenia). They do not possess elite talent by any means, but they have shown that they don’t mind being considered the underdogs. Karhan and Hamsik need to lead the team to positive results.

World Cup 2010: Slovakia Want To Go As Far As Possible - Stanislav Sestak

Slovakia qualified for the World Cup for the first time in history by finishing ahead of Slovenia and Poland in their qualification group and experienced forward Stanislav Sestak is eagerly anticipating this summer's tournament.

"I’m really excited to be going to South Africa. It’s supposed to be a fantastic country and I’m really looking forward to forming my own impressions. And it’s always been my dream to play at a World Cup. I’m about to live the dream," said Sestak to fifa.com.

"I’d think first place in the group is already taken. I’m pretty certain the world champions [Italy] can cope with this group. But we’re contenders for second place. That would be a huge success for Slovakia.

"I'm not sure whether the team would be satisfied with reaching the round of 16. It always depends on who you play, so let’s wait and see. We want to go as far as we can."

Weiss eager for playing time at Bolton

Vladimir Weiss hopes his starring 30-minute cameo at Stoke last Saturday can earn him more game-time in Bolton's three remaining matches of the season.

The Slovakian international helped turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory that almost guarantees Premier League survival for Wanderers. "Doing anything when you come on is always really hard, especially when you are losing," admitted the on-loan City winger.

"But I am happy that I came on and we managed to turn the game around. "Someone has to create the goals. It was me this time but next time it will be somebody else. "I'm just hoping that with three more games left, I can get a couple more starts or more minutes under my belt.

"I came to Bolton to play and it hasn't really been happening. I have been really frustrated. "However, it's the Premier League - the hardest league in the world - and I know it will be tough to get in any team. But what I am thinking and hoping is that I will play a bit more."

Weiss, who has been on the Blues' books for nearly five years, is due back at Carrington at the end of the season. "I don't know what's going to happen in the summer," admitted the 20-year-old prospect. "At the moment, I know City want me back and I love playing for them, so I don't think I will come back here."

However, Weiss wants to finish with a flourish with Wanderers to ensure a trip to the World Cup this summer. "I came here to Bolton to play so I could get in the Slovakian squad," he said. "The season is nearly over and, as it is now, I have been criticised a little bit over in Slovakia. That's football and I understand that.

"I was in the team when we won the group. I think the manager (Weiss's father) will pick players who have been in the squad and I hope that will mean me. "It's only football and there are many more important things in the world." Slovakia World Cup Tickets are now available online. Sestak: It's like a dream

Stanislav Sestak has spent just short of three seasons in the German Bundesliga with Ruhr Valley outfit VfL Bochum, weighing in with a total of 22 goals and 12 assists in the last two campaigns to help a club of modest means preserve their top-flight status.

This term, Bochum are again fighting for their first division lives, and once again, a huge burden of responsibility has fallen on the Slovakia hitman, whose contribution this time round amounts to six goals and three assists. The 27-year-old is clearly a key figure at Bochum as well as for his country, who have qualified for the FIFA World Cup™ finals for the first time since gaining independence in 1993.

Sestak more than proved his worth to the Slovak national team with six goals in six games on the road to South Africa 2010. The striker and his team-mates have been drawn in Group F at this summer’s tournament, along with world champions Italy, Paraguay and New Zealand.

Sestak spoke to FIFA.com about the global showdown in June and July, his predator’s nose for goal, his role in the national team and Slovakia’s targets at the 2010 finals. Trophy fever strikes Slovakia, Slovenia

A throng of adoring football fans more than 10,000-strong gathered last weekend in the north-western Slovakian city of Zilina to enjoy a rare close-up view of the one of the world’s most recognised sport symbols.

In front of the huge audience assembled in Zilina’s main square, Jan Mucha, Slovakia’s national team goalkeeper unveiled the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy to excited onlookers. "Of course the World Cup is going to be the highlight of my career," said the Poland-based player, getting set to line up between the posts for Slovakia in their first-ever world finals. "Winning the World Cup is every footballer’s dream. It’s amazing to be this close to the trophy. I didn’t fully appreciate so far what it means for fans that Slovakia qualified for the World Cup. But I understand it today. We can’t fail them in South Africa," said the Legia Warsaw net-minder after the climax of the emotional event.

An endless procession of footballing icons, politicians and other celebrities seized the opportunity to be photographed together with football's 'Holy Grail.' Slovakia's qualification for this year's FIFA World Cup signals the first time that the country will take part in football's flagship tournament as an independent nation. And the only person allowed the chance to hold the trophy in Slovakia was President Ivan Gasparovic, who commented "Holding the trophy I had a dream of our players raising this golden icon. The fact that the FIFA World Cup Trophy has come to Slovakia is an opportunity to reconnect the dream with the nation’s football ambitions and to believe that dreams can come true."

Napoli dampen Hamsik rumours

Italian Serie A side Napoli have played down speculation from the English media linking Marek Hamsik with a £25million move to Chelsea.

Indeed, the sporting director of the Naples outfit, Riccardo Bigon, has stated that the 22-year-old Slovakia international will be staying with the club.

"We have not received any official offer. But if some clubs are monitoring our players it gives us pleasure because it means we are doing a good job," said Bigon. "But Hamsik is an important player and he will remain with us."

The midfielder joined Napoli from Brescia in the summer of 2007 and is under contract until June 2012. Slovakia World Cup Tickets are now available online. Blue is the colour for Hamsik

Marek Hamsik is in the form of his life, an undisputed first choice in the light blue of Napoli and an equally certain starter in the dark blue of Slovakia. The 22-year old attacking midfielder is also his country’s captain and the man coach Vladimir Weiss will be looking to when the eastern Europeans line up at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

Despite his young age, Hamsik can already be considered a veteran of Italian football. He was only 17 when he joined Serie B outfit Brescia from Slovan Bratislava, the club where he nurtured his skills. After learning the ropes, the teenager forced his way into the Biancoazzurro starting XI and enjoyed an exceptional 2006/07 season, scoring ten goals in 40 games and exerting an increasing influence in the side.

Slovakia Best Goal Scorers: Szilárd Németh

Szilárd Németh (born 8 August 1977 in Komárno) is a professional Slovakian footballer currently playing for German club Alemannia Aachen. He usually plays as a striker.

Németh started his career with Slovan Bratislava, before moving to eastern Slovakian club FC Košice. At both of these clubs he achieved impressive goalscoring feats and earned a loan move to the giants of the region, Czech team Sparta Prague.

From here he moved back to Slovakia with one of the top teams of the country, Inter Bratislava. It was here that he started to impress Western European scouts. Amid rumours of interest from Inter Milan, he eventually signed for English Premiership side Middlesbrough in 2001.

His four years at the club were frustrating. He scored twenty-eight goals in nearly one hundred and fifty appearances, but never commanded a regular starting place.

The 2005–06 Premiership season saw Németh turn down numerous transfer offers, including a rumoured two million pound bid from UEFA Cup champions CSKA Moscow. Németh suffered an early injury against Liverpool, which ruled him out for several months. Following his return from injury, he was loaned out to Strasbourg in January 2006.

After Strasbourg's relegation from Ligue 1 the club decided against signing Németh on a permanent basis and he returned to Middlesbrough. In late August 2006, after his contract with Middlesbrough expired, Németh agreed to join German Bundesliga side Alemannia Aachen on a two-year deal.

In November 2006, Németh suffered a pulmonary embolism after a thrombosis developed from a calf injury. The condition was found early, saving his life, and he subsequently returned to the squad. Németh has impressed at international level, scoring 22 times in 59 appearances for Slovakia.

On the 19th May 2008, Szilárd Németh signed a 2 year contract extension with Alemannia Aachen until the end of the 2009/10 season, keeping the eagerness of the viewers ticket4football.com provides football fans with the facility to get Slovakia world cup tickets and football tickets for other soccer events online.

Czechoslovakia national football team

The Czechoslovakia national football team was the national association football team of Czechoslovakia from 1922 to 1993. At the dissolution of Czechoslovakia at the end of 1992, the team was participating in UEFA qualifying Group 4 for the 1994 World Cup; it completed this campaign under the name Representation of Czechs and Slovaks (RCS). The subsequent Czech Republic national football team and Slovakia national football team are both recognised by FIFA and UEFA as successors of the Czechoslovakia team.

The Czechoslovakia team was controlled by the Czechoslovak Football Association. The team had two runner-up finishes in World Cups (1934, 1962) and a European Championship win in 1976. Czechoslovakia qualified for the final stages of the 1990 World Cup and shortly afterwards their national coach Jozef Venglos moved to England to become Aston Villa manager, although his tenure was not a success and lasted just one season.
